REVIEW:
The
San Carlos Country Club is an 18-hole Par 72 championship
facility and was originally designed by Roy Dye, son of
the legendary Pete Dye. Playing at 6542 yards from the gold
tees, this ocean and mountain view course provides a challenge
for golfers of all playing abilities.
GolfTest
USA had the pleasure of reviewing The San Carlos Country
Club in April of 2004 when one of our staff members was
in the area looking at a new medieval castle which was for
sale just a ½ mile from the course. He contacted
Martin Castillo, the Head Golf Pro and he invited GolfTest
USA to come and play a round with him. San Carlos is a small
fishing resort and is renowned for some of the best deep
sea fishing to be found anywhere. A small core of Americans
and Canadians has already discovered this wonderful vacation
destination but for the most part it remains one of the
best kept vacation secrets in all of North America. There
is much more to do besides play golf as the beaches and
water sports are some of the best in the region. The "real"
Mexican food is to die for and the restaurants are very
reasonable. The tacos at the local taco stand are the best
we have found anywhere.
The
San Carlos Country Club is the only golf course within an
80 mile radius and we were delighted to have the opportunity
to play there. The course has recently changed owners and
they are committed to upgrading the entire facility to insure
that it meets with the standards Americans are used to.
We found the course to be most enjoyable to play. The course
tends to be very forgiving allowing even the most wayward
shots to get back into play. The views from anywhere on
the course are breathtaking with the ocean and the mountains
always in the background. The fairways were a little dry
and we were informed that this was the dry season and within
a month they would be lush and green. One benefit was the
additional 100 yards of roll we got from all of our drives
so we did not feel deprived. The greens were in great shape
and held most of our approach shots even with our mid irons.
The bunkers were not up to American standards but we were
told that they are going to be upgraded. Martin Castillo
was a most gracious host as was the rest of the staff. You
could tell that it was their intention to do everything
they could to make sure we had an enjoyable day of golf.
And we certainly did. Americans tend to be spoiled when
it comes to having a wide choice of golf courses to play
but we can assure anyone who comes to play the San Carlos
Country Club that they will not be disappointed.
RATING:
GolfTest USA recommends San Carlos Country Club as an "ELITE"
golf course in the West Central Mexico area.
